  • The Temples of Katas Raj

    Digg Digg

Katas is a complex of Hindu temples dedicated to lord shiva. There is a reference in Maha Baharat about a “Chashma-e-Alam”, which has been identified as the water pond of Katas popularly knows as Kataksha or Katak Shall.  According to traditions, lord shiva on the death of his wife satti wept so bitterly that out of the strings of his tears two water ponds came into existence; one known as “puskar” near Ajmer in India and other called “Kataksha” at Katas in district Chakwal.

Katas Raj Constitutes a major group of hindu temples most of which were constructed during the reign of Hindu Shahiyas.  The earliest temple at Katas Raj dates back to later half of 6th century A.D.

Last month I had a chance to visit this place. It is 24Km away from KallarKhar on a road to Choa Saiden Shah from KallarKhar Motorway M2 interchange.  The place was almost ruined and reconstruction and renovation work was under progress.  The pound had fish & turtles in it and only foreign hindu tourists are allowed to take bath in it.  The main temple was locked for general public but our guide get it opened for us (as a privileged tourists :P ).  There are narrow corridors with stairs where you cannot stand straight and because of Bat’s shit this place smells too bad.  If you ever visit this place don’t forget to take water and some eatables with you as there are no good shops nearby.  I did some photography with my Sony Cybershot w220.  Enjoy!
