Katas is a complex of Hindu temples dedicated to lord shiva. There is a reference in Maha Baharat about a “Chashma-e-Alam”, which has been identified as the water pond of Katas popularly knows as Kataksha or Katak Shall. According to traditions, lord shiva on the death of his wife satti wept so bitterly that out of the strings of his tears two water ponds came into existence; one known as “puskar” near Ajmer in India and other called “Kataksha” at Katas in district Chakwal.
Katas Raj Constitutes a major group of hindu temples most of which were constructed during the reign of Hindu Shahiyas. The earliest temple at Katas Raj dates back to later half of 6th century A.D.
