HTC Desire – Gingerbread vs Froyo Benchmark

While official Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for HTC Desire is not out yet and it may take couple of month before HTC starts rolling it out, xda member LeeDroid has released custom Gingerbread rom for HTC Desire with HTC Sense. Today, I installed this rom on my HTC Desire and so far its looks awesome, navigation is much more smoother then Froyo, GMT+6 bug for Pakistan is fixed, updated version of default software, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and FM are working fine. I’ve done some benchmarks to compare performance of this gingerbread rom with my previous Android 2.2 Froyo Vs Eclair benchmark.
Official uTorrent Remote App for Android Released

BitTorrent Inc has released their official uTorrent Remote app to manage your Legal downloads directly from your Android device. This app has awesome interface and comes with lots of features. But in order to use it you must be running uTorrent 3.0 Alpha (Get it here) built on your pc, so it may refuse to work with some private legal trackers
According to uTorrent’s Blog some of key features of this app are:
Check the status of a download directly from your Android Smartphone
Add, pause or remove µTorrent downloads on your computer
µTorrent remote registers as a .torrent handler so you can browse and add torrents just as if you were on your PC at home.
Start, pause or remove µTorrent downloads in progress on your computer
Update and add torrents from RSS subscriptions
Transfer, save and play any completed file from your PC right to your device.
LG Optimus 2X – First Dual-Core Smartphone

LG Optimus 2s ix First dual-core smartphone based on Nividia’s Tegra 2 processor running at 1GHz. It is expected to be launched in 1st quarter 2011. It is capable of capturing 1080p HD video with its 8 megapixel primary cam and output 1080p HD video via HDMI port. It has a secondary front facing 1.3 megapixel camera for video calling.
It will be launched with Android 2.2 Froyo with an upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread later. It has 4inch WVGA display with 480 x 800 resolution, 8 GB internal memory and expandable with upto 32GB external microSD. With only 1.5Ah battery it will be interesting to see for how long it will last before you’ve to charge it again.
Android 3.0 Honeycomb for Tablets [video]

Few weeks earlier Google released Nexus S with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, now today at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas they’ve shown Android 3.0 Honeycomb preview video which is built entirely for tablets. With release of honeycomb tablets there will be real Apple iPad’s competitors in market.
Gingerbread Keyboard on Android Without Rooting

Few days back I did a blog post on how to install Gingerbread Keyboard on HTC desire but that required your phone to be rooted. Now someone on XDA forums has released Gingerbread keyboard as installable apk file that doesn’t require root.
To install Gingerbread keyboard
1. Download the apk file to your phone. download links given below.
2. Open the apk file and install it.
3. After Gingerbread keyboard is installed go to Settings > Language & Keyboard and check Gingerbread Keyboard checkbox to enable it.
4. Now open any text editor and long press on input box, it will open “Select Input Method” popup and select Gingerbread keyboard option.
Facebook For Android 1.5 – Chat & Push Notifications

Facebook has updated their android app with long awaited features like Chat and Push notifications. however notifications for comments, likes and wall posts are still missing. Here is what they said on their Facebook page.
Facebook for Android v1.5 now available in the Android marketplace. New features include Chat featuring background mode (you can receive chat messages while using other applications) and push notifications (get notified sooner).
Push notifications are only supported for devices on Android 2.2+. If you are not seeing push notifications, your device may not be supported.
This update is available in Android Marketplace.
Android 2.3 Gingerbread keyboard for HTC Desire

Earlier this week Google released Android 2.3 Gingerbread along with their new Nexus S phone. Android 2.3 is not yet officially released for any phone like Nexus 1 or HTC Desire but because Android is an Open Source OS and its SDK is available, developers have managed to extract its keyboard and made it available for Android 2.2 Froyo Users.
Prerequisites
1. you must have rooted your phone, check this thread on XDA forums. It has a nice guide on How To root your root your phone using Unrevoked.
2. ClockworkMod recovery must be installed. To install it first install ROM Manager by ColockworkMod from android market place and then install ColockworkMod recovery by opening Rom Manager.
