DELL S2409w LCD Monitor Review and LCD Buying Advice
Never buy anything without at least 2 weeks of thinking and many hours of research, THEY say! but don’t think too much or you’ll never be able to buy it.
This is a delayed review, I bought this monitor probably 5 months ago. I wanted to use it before I could write how good or bad it is. I was using a 60Ton branded 21” CRT monitor and I used to move that with help of at least two or more people. I might find a photo of my old CRT which I’ll be happy to show to anyone if requested.
Here is DELL S2409W 24” 1080p Full HD LCD Monitor.
Buying an LCD for me wasn’t very easy as I had to decide between Samsung and DELL. Samsung has the most pretty outlook and finish and DELL has quality and more built-in features. The two models, actually three; two of which were Samsung are listed after a Jump.
*JUMP*
All three LCD’s listed here are Full HD with 1080p resolution.
Samsung P2270 22”
Samsung P2370 23”
DELL S2409W 24”
Samsung monitors are unbelievably pretty. Transparent bezels and borders around the screen and everything sheesha. Here are both Samsung and DELL side by side.. Both models of Samsung 22” and 23” look the same.
Samsung lacks an HDMI port and a couple of Inches so I decided to go for ugly DELL comparatively. But it turned out to be a great decision for me. Samsung 22” was of same price but 23” Samsung P2370 was around 5000 PKR ($60) more expensive than 24” DELL. Plus, Bigger is better.
Also, Samsung’s screen is glossy and shiny where as DELL has a anti-glare screen so you won’t see your own face reflected in screen. I love this feature of DELL and It was also a major aspect of me choosing this one over Samsung.
Now lets just drop Samsung and talk about Dell’s black beauty. Its black all over, even the screws are black, The new and latest models of Dell feature a white colored back, I don’t know if they are impressed by Cows.

HDMI connectivity is one of the best features S2409W has to offer. I took my little cousin’s PS3’s original HDMI cable to connect the monitor with my laptop. I use DVI to connect it with my Desktop Computer. The software to swap between inputs is very easy to use.
S2409W has power button on bottom right corner in front and only 3 buttons on its right side, which are a little bit annoying as I have to judge on which button my finger is. The options control panel has the following options.
Brightness / Contrast
Input Select
Color Settings
Display Settings (Vertical and Horizontal Positioning and Sharpness)
Audio Settings
Other Settings (Language, Menu Timer, LCD conditioning etc.)
24” is the perfect size for a work environment. I am a designer so I need a lot of area to move my cursor and work on. You might find this size a bit too large for normal web browsing and document editing like tasks.
This monitor is Ph.D in playing movies. Vivid and brilliant blacks make movie watching a bliss. I haven’t played a lot of video games but I’m sure it does a great job with them too. I’ve watched a lot of Full HD 1080p movies including AVATAR, Alice in Wonderland, Sherlock Holmes, District9 etc. and they were all amazing to watch.
On the negative side, I have already spotted 2 dead pixels on my monitor after 5 months of use. I am thinking to contact the DELL support for warranty, They are very difficult to spot on screen but I am afraid of getting more dead pixels. Moreover, the stand shakes the monitor more than a little bit when table moves. The ergonomic features lack in this model but for the price you get a Full HD monitor ergonomics aren’t really affordable.
I am also thinking to buy an XBOX360 that I’ll be able to hook up with this monitor easily using HDMI port. Unlike Samsung which has only DVI and VGA ports.
Here are some more photos for you. I took unpacking photos but I find it unnecessary to show them as I’ve already used it for 5 months, although not too much as I mostly use my laptop screen. But when I switch to DELL, there is a hell of quality difference, the brightness is absolute! Blacks are brilliant and whites are blinding.
Here is a Samsung monitor Kryptic bought last year. It is 2232BW 22” Monitor. It has a DVI and VGA port. Here is a photo of Samsung 2232BW, excuse the dust please.
So, If you want to upgrade to an LCD or buy a new model, I would recommend any monitor with these features
1080p Full HD Resolution
HDMI / DVI-D / VGA Ports
22” Inches + Screen
At the time of writing, DELL has introduced its new model which is actually a minor upgrade of the DELL S2409W I have reviewed above. It is called DELL ST2410 24” Full HD LCD Monitor.
This new model ST2410 is almost identical to S2409W. The only difference is White Back Body. Its brightness is 250 cd/m2 where as old monitor had 300 cd/m2 . The price is similar as well, I bought S2409W for Rs. 24500 and now you can get the new ST2410 in the same price.
As for my conclusion, You won’t go wrong if you buy a DELL Monitor.
Here is a Video Review from CNET Guys. I watched this video before I went to buy my DELL with my girl friend.
