Sand is used because of its electron mobility, its band gap between conduction and valence band, its ability to maintain its forms at high temperatures, and finally it has a naturally high resistance but when doped with certain elements it has an extremely low resistance making it a great conductor. This allows for area's that are insulators and conductors allowing for manipulation of current.
